Enhancing Connectivity and Driving Economic Advancement in West Africa
On 16th of February, 2023, Onix Data Centres Ltd announced the launch of its second West African neutral colocation data centre. Expanding on its existing Tier IV data centre in Ghana, the new data centre is strategically located in Dakar, Senegal, at the 2Africa Cable Landing Station (“CLS”). The 2Africa cable is 45,000km long and connects Africa, Europe, and Asia
The fully integrated neutral colocation facility gives customers the ability to connect to all submarine cables in Senegal (ACE, MainOne, 2Africa) in a wholesale environment, resulting in unprecedented low latency global connectivity. This is of great benefit to financial institutions and enterprises who require mission critical access to global cloud providers. Onix leverages SDN-ready partners to ease migration and onboarding to its data centres.
Centrally located, Senegal offers low sovereign risk with strong institutions and an educated workforce. The country is undergoing significant economic advancement led by the exploitation of the oil and gas shelf by BP, which will soon rank Senegal as the 4th biggest producer of gas worldwide. Applications and data hosted in Senegal will be accessible across the African continent over multiple submarine cables at lower latencies which clearly provides significant advantages over hosting in Europe or North America.
The exploitation of the oil and gas shelf is likely to lead to further significant foreign direct investment into the country. Senegal will feature very significantly in the development of data centres in West Africa, facilitating the hosting of corporates, as well as providers of cloud service solutions.
“The launch on 16 February 2023 of the data centre in Senegal is an exciting step forward in our mission to provide superior neutral colocation services and connectivity to our customers in West Africa,” said Michael Nahon, Onix CEO.
La Colombe Group joint CEO, Pape Gueye, Onix’s partner in Senegal, stated “the launch of the first neutral Data Centre at the CLS in Senegal, and on the African continent, will bring significant benefits not only to local businesses, but also to governments and public institutions in the region. By providing secure and reliable access to data services, the data centre can support the digitisation efforts of these organisations, helping them to improve their services and better serve their communities. Additionally, the data sovereignty aspect of the centre ensures that sensitive information is protected and remains within the jurisdiction of the country and the West African Zone, which is of utmost importance in today’s data-driven world.”
With two data centres in Africa, Ghana’s only Tier IV Data centre and the newly launched facility in Senegal, Onix is uniquely positioned to offer unparalleled service to customers seeking a central hub for West Africa.
